All names must have some relation to the company it’s associated with and must not break any of WhatsApp’s business policies.
Display names must meet our guidelines in order to be able to send messages using the WhatsApp Business API or qualifying for official WhatsApp Business accounts.
Below are five basic principles to keep in mind when it comes to display names:
1 - Principle: Policy compliance
A name must not violate any of WhatsApp’s business policies. Here it’s an example with a hypothetical store that sells wine glasses:
- Accepted: ABC wine glasses.
- Not accepted: ABC wines
2 - Principle: Accurate representation of the company
A display name should represent:
- A company or the service it provides, the product or department.
- A test or demo account, which has a partnership with the company (e.g. Fresh Products Ltd. Test)
- A government affiliated organization. This requieres additional approval from the WhatsApp team.
A display name should NOT be:
- A person’s full name.
- A generic term (e.g. fashion)
- A generic geographic location (e.g. New York)
- A slogan or a long description.
3 - Principle: Brand consistency in other places
A display name must be under a consitent brand that possesses external sources to it (e.g. the company’s website). Here’s an example for a product line labeled “cold-pressed fresh fruit juices":
- Accepted: cold-pressed fresh fruit juices (as branded in the company’s website)
- Not accepted: fresh fruit juices (there is a change in the brand’s name, caused by omitting “cold-pressed”)
4 - Principle: clear relationship with the company
The display name must have a clear relationship with the company (it must be present on the company’s website or in any external referencing media).
For example:
- Accepted: name of a charity mentioned on the website of a non-profit organization.
- Not accepted: name of a charity not mentioned on any of the organization’s external websites.
5 - Principle: Correct formatting
1 - A display name must be uniformly and grammatically correct in both capital and lowercase letters and must not use words with all capital letters (except when dealing with acronyms). For example:
- Accepted: New computers of the city.
- Not accepted: NEW COMPUTERS OF THE CITY
2 - It must use uniform spacing. Example for a company called “Lil’Cupcakes”:
- Accepted: Lil’Cupcakes
- Not accepted: Lil ‘Cupcakes (a space has been added (’ ') which makes it differ from the external trade name)
3 - You must not use additional unnecessary punctuation.
4 - You must not use emojis.
5 - You must not include symbol characters, such as trademark designations.
6 - It must contain at least 3 characters. Example for a company called “KT Sir”:
- Accepted: KT Sir
- Not accepted: KT
7 - You must not use a URL format
Note: these rules do not apply if a company or organization already utilized their brand this way.
You will be able to change the display name up to 3 times. Once this limit has been reached, you must wait 30 days minimum in order to request a new name change.
